Why travelers love it

“A sprawling all‑ages all‑inclusive resort in Punta Cana with pools, spa, kids water park, and shared dining across adjacent properties”

Guests praise the wide variety of restaurants and bars across the Grand Bahia complex, the two large pools with swim‑up bars, the kids water park, and access to spa and nightlife options across sister properties.

Food & drink

Strong

Buffets are varied and reliable across the complex, but the à la carte restaurants are where the food actually shines, if you can get in. Nomad (Mongolian), Meat, Takara, and Limbo draw the strongest praise; Rodizio and Portofino draw shrugs.

Dining overview

A‑la‑carte restaurants within the resort offer varied cuisines; guests also have access to restaurants across the complex; buffets are separate per property; reservations required for a‑la‑carte dinners.

Beach

Strong

The beach itself is beautiful, wide, and well raked, with plenty of loungers, but sargassum shows up in stretches and Aquamarine guests face a 500-meter walk or shuttle to reach it. When the sea cooperates, it's a highlight.

The resort is part of a large complex; most rooms are not directly on the beach and require a walk or shuttle to reach Bavaro Beach, but the beach is fine white sand with calm water and excellent for kids.

Pools

Strong

Three large, well-kept pools cover every mood: a lively main pool with swim-up bar, a quiet pool with jacuzzis, and family zones in the other sections. Pool waitstaff earn repeated shout-outs.

Editorial pool rating

Two large on‑property pools with swim‑up bars, plus access to pools across adjacent Grand properties; lively atmosphere and can be crowded early.

Swim-up bar

Rooms & suites

Rooms are Junior Suite with king or two full beds, whirlpool tubs, balconies or patios; Premium/Club Hacienda offers added perks like closeness to beach, coffeemaker, bathrobes, slippers. Decor is functional and somewhat dated.

Room details here are AI-assisted, compiled from the resort's own website and public sources. Categories and names change often — confirm the exact room when you book.

What’s included

Mixed

For a mid-tier price, you get a huge complex with lots of variety and warm staff, but the property is showing its age and recent price hikes under new management have narrowed the gap with true 5-star competitors. Solid if you go in knowing it's a 4-star experience.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Good fit

Couples do well here, especially in the adults-only Aquamarine section, with quiet pools, SHHH zones, and a romantic beach a short shuttle away. Just know the wider complex is family-heavy, so it's not a sealed adults-only bubble.

Families

Good fit

The wider Bahia Principe complex is built for families, with spacious rooms, easy pool and beach access, and shuttles that shuttle kids across the sprawl. Esmeralda is the family-friendly sibling; Aquamarine is not.

Peace & Quiet

Mixed

Peace depends entirely on where you plant yourself: the quiet pool and refurbished blocks deliver calm, while main pools get loud once the entertainment team fires up. SHHH signage in the adults-only zone is enforced and appreciated.

On‑site spa and gym, children’s water park, nightclub, Pueblo Principe shopping village, entertainment shows, sports facilities like tennis, mini‑golf, go‑cart track, and animated activities.

“Honest Family Review – Bahia Principe Luxury Esmeralda We are a family of five from the UK and stayed for two weeks at Bahia Principe Luxury Esmeralda. This was our fifth Bahia stay and third trip to the Dominican Republic. Check-in was quick and welcoming, and the rooms were spacious and comfortable. After a week, we were kindly upgraded to swim-up rooms, which were the highlight of our holiday. The resort grounds are beautiful and well maintained, but service was inconsistent. Housekeeping and”

“We are having a great time at Bahia Principe Luxury Esmeralda. We are a family of three, and the room is spacious and the bed is really comfortable. The food is good, and every day you can try different menus. The only downside is the pasta, which is not the best, but there is plenty of other delicious local food to try! Rice, meat, and fish have never disappointed. It’s easy to access the beach, pool, and restaurants, which was essential for us with a 6-year-old. What made our holiday even more”

“What a great vacation spent with our kids and family! The staff here are really what makes this place shine - everyone is so kind and took the time to make us feel so welcomed. The staff at the sports bar, matum, buffets, and restaurants were so fantastic and work very hard with smilea on their faces. The guests services in the lobby, concierge, and housekeeping were also fantastic. We had family photos done on the beach, the photographer was professional and made it a breeze to get it done quic”

Rosie answers from this resort’s guest reviews and our research — with quotes.

Know before you book

  • Sargassum can be heavy on bad days
  • Aquamarine rooms sit well back from shore
  • Rodizio and Portofino underwhelm
  • Buffet food sometimes served lukewarm

What you should know

What to Know

This is a massive multi-resort complex where planning matters: book à la carte restaurants via the app the moment your 10-day window opens, or you'll eat buffet all week. Aquamarine is adults-only but shared spaces are not, and some room blocks badly need renovation.

PUJ nearest airport~30 min transfer

Rooms remote from the beach should expect shuttle or walk; book a‑la‑carte dinners as early as possible; bring insect repellent; safe and Wi‑Fi may incur extra charges in rooms despite public areas offering free Wi‑Fi.

Good to know

  • Large complex requires shuttle or long walks
  • Most rooms not beachfront
  • Swim‑up bar pools fill early
