- Poolside steakhouse a favorite
- Drinks flow freely
- No reservations needed for dinner
Heads up
- Italian and Shanghai à la cartes disappoint

Beach
StrongWide, walkable Playacar beach is a genuine highlight, with easy water entry and shared access to sister-resort infrastructure. Sargassum shows up but staff work to clear it.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Wide sandy beach with nice water
- 5-10 minute walk from rooms
- Access to two neighboring Riu beaches
- Staff actively rake seaweed
Heads up
- Sargassum can be heavy at times
- No drink service on the sand
- Smoking permitted, butts in sand
White‑sand beach with free sun loungers and non‑motorized beach gear, clean and rock‑free sand in Playacar gated estate.
Pools
MixedFour pools give options, but they're small, crowded, and showing serious wear. Chair-hogging starts before dawn.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Four pools including a swim-up bar
- Warm pool water
- Pool activities: aqua fit, water polo, foam party
Heads up
- Missing tiles and poor repair
- Swim-up bar too small to linger
- Loungers reserved with towels from 6am
- Kids everywhere, including 'quiet' pool
Four swimming pools, including a children's pool, a pool with a swim-up bar, and a sun terrace.
Rooms & suites
Rooms are comfortable and clean but décor and bathrooms are dated; some categories lack bathroom or shower doors; minibars and liquor dispensers are stocked.
Room details here are AI-assisted, compiled from the resort's own website and public sources. Categories and names change often — confirm the exact room when you book.
What’s included
MixedFor a budget-conscious repeat traveler, the price-to-fun ratio works; for anyone expecting a true 5-star, it doesn't. Rooms and pools badly need refurbishment.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Solid value for the buffet and drinks
- Staff service punches above the price
- Repeat guests return 5+ times
- Location close to Playa del Carmen
Heads up
- Not the 5-star it markets
- Rooms dated, no USB charging
- Priced higher than neighboring options
- Specialty restaurants repeat buffet dishes
Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.
Amenities & activities
Couples
Good fitA sweet spot for repeat honeymooners and anniversary trips who value warm staff over polish. Expect thoughtful touches (balloons, champagne) if you flag the occasion.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Anniversary and honeymoon gestures from staff
- Peaceful evenings for relaxed romance
- Tequila block rooms feel more special
- 5th Avenue only a 5-minute taxi
Heads up
- Dated rooms lack romantic polish
- Adults-only vibe diluted by kids in all pools
Families
StretchCompact layout puts rooms, beach, and pools within a short walk, and kids love the roaming coatis and iguanas. But the children's pool is tiny and the resort can't decide if it's a family or party property.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Everything within easy walking distance
- Wildlife on the grounds delights kids
- Riu Land kids club and slides
- No reservations needed for dinner
Heads up
- Kids' pool undersized and tucked behind BBQ
- Kids spill into every other pool
- Smoking on the beach near families
- Cigarette butts in the sand
Peace & Quiet
StrongEvenings run peaceful and the resort skews sleepy, which suits rest-seekers but frustrates anyone wanting nightlife. The 'quiet pool' is only quiet by suggestion.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Very calm evening atmosphere
- Small footprint feels restful
- Friday Riu party for those who want energy
- Great for solo travelers wanting downtime
Heads up
- Quiet pool unmonitored, gets loud
- Some guests wanted more nightly entertainment
- Occasional construction/maintenance noise
On‑site Renova Spa with treatment rooms, beauty salon, gym; kids’ club with indoor and outdoor play areas; live entertainment theater; gift shop; non‑motorized beach gear.

What past guests say
“I've stayed at RIU hotels twice now, and I've never had any problems anywhere. The service has always been incredible, and even though it rained during my stay, the fun never stopped. The food was delicious, especially the amazing Asian restaurant—my favorite! The beach was beautiful the day the sky cleared. I highly recommend this hotel; it's great value for money. I went to celebrate a couple of family members' birthdays, and they decorated the room.”

“This is quite possibly the WORST hotel Experience I’ve ever had. Finishing up a 7 day 7 night trip with sewage and issues with urine and feces in our hall and shower. Pictures here are Factual and happened to us. We were moved from the 1st room the day we checked in. Black mold everywhere and a broken TV. They gave us a phone number at the front desk for a corporate office, which was of no use. There are no corporate contacts on the weekend. Everything is closed. They moved us to a different...”
